Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Academy is changing one significant rule for the 2021 Oscars. Movies that don’t hit the big screen are now eligible for nomination for next year’s Oscar Awards.

Originally, movies need to have a 7-day run in Los Angeles theaters so that they could be nominated in the Oscars. However, because of COVID-19, The Academy’s Board of Governors has decided that movies that are released online can now be nominated in the award show.
In a statement, Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said, “The Academy supports our members and colleagues during this time of uncertainty. We recognize the importance of their work being seen and also celebrated, especially now, when audiences appreciate movies more than ever.”

They have also changed other rules for next year’s awards, including combining the category of Sound Mixing and Sound Editing into one award.
