Teddy’s Bigger Burgers: If Bigger Isn’t Better, Then Why Is It So Popular?
Aloha! Finally, Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, Hawaii’s top burger joint, hase set foot in the Philippines! What’s so special about Teddy’s Bigger Burgers and what’s to love, you ask?
Teddy’s Bigger Burgers began in the backyard cookouts of Hawaii-based founders Ted Tsakiris and Rich Stula, both burger lovers. Soon after that, they opened 11 locations in Hawaii, and recently on the U.S. mainland in Washington and Iowa with stores soon to open in California and Texas. The Philippines marks Teddy’s 2nd international location, following Japan.
Before it officially opened to the public, I was privileged enough to try out Teddy’s Bigger Burgers and meet the lovely team behind this burger joint.
Upon entering, my companion and I were welcomed with a lei while the staff said “ALOHA!” with an infectious smile! I immediately knew that their staff would be serving us happily throughout the day. And true enough, their service was impeccable.
Mr. Raymund Magdaluyo, one of the group owners of SumoBurger Global Inc. who brought Teddy’s Bigger Burgers to the Philippines, welcomed us all and shared how he and his co-owners did it. This burger joint wouldn’t be a success if it weren’t for their hands-on founders. All the way from the U.S., Ted Tsakiris and Rich Stula joined us in opening the latest foreign burger chain of the Philippines.

Their interiors are very tropical, relaxing and laid-back, very much resembling their origins in Hawaii.

Of course, you cannot judge a burger joint without actually indulging in their burgers. I must say: Teddy’s Burgers left me speechless and immovable (because it made me happily bloated).
“You BACON me crazy!”
I ordered the Cheeseburger and added more cheese and bacon because… why not? I ordered Cheesy Fries as my side dish. After my first bite of the cheeseburger, I couldn’t fathom how good it was. The patty is perfect and I really felt how fresh and genuine the meat is. “Our patty is made from 100% corn-fed U.S. Black Angus ground chuck, shipped regularly from the US from the same supplier of Teddy’s Hawaii, with no binders or fillers. And because the patty is charboiled, extra fat drips down instead of the patty swimming in grease,” Teddy’s Bigger Burgers Philippines Executive Chef Kristen Habawel explained.
Did I also mention that its bun is the most perfect bun I’ve ever tasted? Golden in color, soft and delicate in texture, with a slightly sweet note that brings out the savory, smoky flavor of the burger. Overall, this is the best cheeseburger I have ever had in my life (no kidding)!
Teri Burger
This is the burger that my companion ordered. It is basted with a sweet teriyaki sauce – a traditional recipe made from scratch – also a must-try!
As for my milkshake, I had a difficult time choosing a flavor because I wanted them all: Chocolate, Coffee, Strawberry, Peanut Butter, Vanilla, Banana! Luckily, I was saved by one of the staff and she mentioned the Captain Crunch Berry Shake, a mixture of Strawberry, Peanut Butter and Malt. Yes, its taste is as good as its name. It is very thick and creamy. “Our shakes are 90% ice cream and 10% milk. Unlike other shakes that are watered down with ice, our shakes have a very rich taste,” assures Chef Habawel.
There are also some additions to the menu that have been made specifically added for the Philippine market, such as the Tiki Wings, and Chicken Tenders.
