 Super Submarine Sandwiches

Last December 2011, a new food establishment, the Super Submarine Sandwich Shop opened its doors to an appreciative crowd in D’Mall, the heart of all tourist activities on the island.  Filling a strong niche amongst travelers, Super Submarine has attracted quite a following with its fun, novel concept, freshly wholesome specialty submarine sandwiches and refreshing drinks that has got its customers returning for more.

Stepping into Super Submarine’s space, one soon realizes that this establishment is definitely something else.  One notices the shops kitschy mascot, the Happy Diver holding up a sign by the entrance that reads the special of the month, and a yellow submarine by the shop logo with a turning propeller that has passer-by’s delighted and have increasingly become a photo op amongst tourists.  Round lights flank the interior yellow walls mimicking port holes, giving off a glow reminiscent of being under the sea.  The aroma of freshly baked bread hits you straightaway making you hungry, while you scan the chalkboard menu behind the refrigerated sandwich counter, which displays a wealth of fresh ingredients for your sandwich.

There is an amazing selection of submarine sandwiches to choose from, and part of the fun is the interactive process of building your own submarine sandwich.  First, one picks from the bread on display – a choice with 3 different types to go by (Italian, Honey Oat or Plain).  Then one has to decide on a deluxe or premium filling. The Deluxe Sandwiches, costing a reasonable P155 for a 6 inch (with P100 additional for a monster 12 inch), consists of a choice between Pepperoni Lyoner, Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad, Veggie, Bacon and Ham.  The Premium Sandwiches costing P195 for a 6 inch (additional P100 for a 12 inch) consists of a choice between Salami, Roast Beef, Turkey, Italian (Pepperoni Lyoner and Salami), Club Sub (Chicken Salad and Bacon) and the best selling Super Sub (Salami, Pepperoni Lyoner and Ham. All of the sandwiches come with Gouda cheese, and the freshest lettuce, tomato, cucumber, bell peppers in the market, as well as olives and jalopeno peppers.  Then, one chooses their dressing, and voila – your customized sandwich is prepared with all your favorite fillings.

Super Submarine is already gaining a solid reputation for their thirst-quenching beverages.  The milkshakes (coming in Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry) are made in the traditional style, just with real ice cream and milk, no ice or artificial flavorings included.  Taking a sip brings you back to childhood with its lush flavor that melts in your mouth.  The Mango Tango has been a big hit with foreigners who want to sample the tropical flavor of the fruit milkshake with chunks of sumptuous fruit blended in.  The Ice Coffee and Frappe, made with freshly brewed coffee are also great thirst quenchers on sunny beach days.

“We wanted to create something special here in Boracay, something that visitors would remember,” mentions Karen Grupp Elizalde, an entrepreneur and former model, who co- owns the restaurant with her husband Freddie.  “Our food is perfect for travelers on the go, and a perfect accompaniment to picnics or boat trips here and around the surrounding islands.”

“Not only that, but our food is fresh, light and healthy, perfect for the beach.  We don’t akin ourselves to other fast food restaurants that serve junk, we source ingredients of the highest quality.  We don’t use any additives or the like,” says Freddie Elizalde, whose family has been coming to Boracay since the 1970’s.  “In keeping with preserving the beauty of our environment, we prefer to use biodegradable paper cups and bags rather than plastic for our product packaging unlike most of the other restaurants in Boracay and the majority of fast food establishments throughout the country, in hopes to limit our carbon footprint as much as possible.”

“We are both very excited and proud to serve the best sandwiches on the island of Boracay, maybe even the Philippines,” says Karen.  “It’s a definite stop in anyone’s Boracay itinerary”
