Before you roll your eyes and let yourself sink into an angsty remembrance of teenage years spent fighting your mom or trying to get away with breaking her rules, consider that she was only hard on you because she wanted the best for you. After all, parents generally act the way they do because they think it’s what you need.

It now turns out, those good intentions do usually end up with good results. According to a study conducted by the University of Essex in England, moms who enforce high standards on their daughters while growing up are more likely to see those daughters succeed. This was founded based on a database of 15,500 female students between the ages of 13 and 14 years old.

The study concluded that girls who were pressured by their mothers had a better chance of making it to college, becoming employed, and escaping teen pregnancy. Researcher Ericka Rascon-Ramirez explained:
‘In many cases we succeeded in doing what we believed was more convenient for us, even when this was against our parents’ will. But no matter how hard we tried to avoid our parents’ recommendations, it is likely that they ended up influencing, in a more subtle manner, choices that we had considered extremely personal.
