The well-loved sitcom about a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store in Toronto, “Kim’s Convenience,” won’t be pushing through with its promised sixth season after producers announced on Tuesday, March 9, that the show has officially been canceled.
In a published statement, it’s been revealed that co-creators Ins Choi and Kevin White have decided to move on to other projects right after shooting the end of season five, which premiered in January 2021 and is set to conclude this March. Because of this, the show’s producers, Thunderbird Films, decided not to continue on with the show.
“Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that has made the show so special,” the producers said.
“It’s been a privilege and a very great pleasure to work with the Kim’s family of gifted writers and performers for the last five years,” they added. “Thank you to our fans for the love and support you’ve given this show.”

Some of the stars of “Kim’s Convenience” took to their own social media to react to the sad news.
“I’m heartbroken. I feel like my journey with Jung was cut short,” wrote Simu Liu, who portrays the rebellious son of Mr. and Mrs. Kim. I feel like you, the fans, deserved better. But I’m proud of all that we accomplished together in 5 seasons. Thanks for all your love and support. This isn’t goodbye, only #OKSeeYou.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Phung, who plays Jung’s best friend, co-worker, roommate, and former partner in crime Kimchee Han, assured fans that they have done all they could and that he is still proud for what they have made. “It’s a bittersweet end to one of the greatest experiences of my life. I’m so proud of what we’ve done and want to reflect and thank those who made it possible,” he began before thanking everyone who made the show possible.
“I won’t dwell on it ending but will instead focus on how amazing this journey and the shows success has been. We were a hit show! We had success around the world,” he continued. “There are six more episodes this season. This 5th season meant a lot, and is possibly our best work. We’re going out on a high note and with our heads up high. From the bottom of my [heart], thank you! One last time, #okseeyou!”

“Kim’s Convenience” premiered in 2016 and has garnered 19 awards, including Canadian Screen Awards for Best Comedy. The first four seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix.
