SHREK THE MUSICAL: From the Swamp to the Stage of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore ! Now Playing Until 19th June 2016

SHREK The Musical, based from the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks Animation film is a visual palette of animation that came to life and is made for today’s audiences – yes, even the so-called millennials. SHREK The Musical is stuffed with the simple spirit of fairy tales, hijacked with a gassy green 8-ft. ogre, a motormouthed donkey, a villain who’s taller than a toilet paper roll named Lord Farquaad and a feisty Princess who belts out her Kung Fu moves in the blink of an eye. What makes SHREK The Musical a big fat hit? The adventures, the satire, the lyrics and the dance moves. If you got a bag filled with lots of sense of humor, it’ll double its weight upon leaving the theater. SHREK The Musical is oozing with lessons on how to live life without judging someone by the looks alone.

Lindsay Dunn as Princess Fiona

At the age of 7, Shrek’s sent off by his parents to fend for himself; Fiona on the other hand’s sent to live alone in a tower for 23 years. Shrek’s swamp became a refugee area when the snotty Lord Farquaad decided to rid his kingdom with all the fairy tale characters. The tube-eared ogre Shrek woke up one day to find the Three Little Pigs, Pinocchio, pixies, dwarves and some faux grandma aka the Big Bad Wolf all around his swamp. He then sealed a deal with Lord Farquaad that he’d get his swamp back only if he managed to save a Princess held captive by a horny dragon.

The rest was  history, painted in green of course.

Following Shrek and Princess Fiona’s tale drops off to developing more than a gaseous chemistry between the two, the plausible rapport is noteworthy on the romance department. Donkey & Lord Farquaad had a tug-o-war stealing the show in one night.

Lord Farquaad is undeniably the charm of the musical, his role requires him to walk on his knees, with tiny fake legs dangling before him. Christian Marriner (Lord Farquaad) revealed to me that he was donning a harness and a rig with puppetry legs, his costume weighs about 40 lbs. (20 kilos) so beat that. The musical is fast-paced; changing costumes at lightning speed by casts and its transition from being a classic fairy tale to a more contemporary rock. It won’t make you complain rather it’d make you wanna stand up and dance along with the actors on stage.

Same plot, same characters as is in the original SHREK movie (2001), infiltrated with potty humour and adult innuendo that made every kid inside the theater nonchalantly scratch their head. Adults will enjoy every minute of it, will not be surprised if you walk home gassy yourself – too much laughter maybe?

With a witty script, music and cast, SHREK The Musical is entertaining, heart-warming and truly SHREK-tacular. Roar your way up to the swamp, I mean, to the Sands.
