The production of the world’s longest-running cartoon, Sazae-san, was put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic. According to reports, the show broadcasted re-runs for the first time in decades.

Last Sunday, broadcaster Fuji Television Network said that this is to keep the staff safe from the virus. They said that “We will halt broadcast of new episodes of Sazae-san for the time being from May 17 and instead air re-runs.”
Sazae-san has been airing on Japanese television every Sunday since 1969. The story focuses on a suburban Japanese housewife named Sazae and her extended family.

The last time the show broadcasted re-runs was in 1975 when production of the show was affected by an earlier oil crisis. The network said that the re-runs to be shown are from two years ago and that they would announce a date for resumption of new episodes as soon as possible.
