Sailing in the Philippines: Ride the Waves at Punta Fuego Regatta

Looking for a new adventure in Manila? Why not try sailing?

I know this may sound fancy but believe me, it’s more of a sport than just a sossy hobby. Aside from the breathtaking seascapes of Batangas, Club Punta Fuego has been a home for cool water sports in the Philippines. I’ve witnessed an international diving competition there a while back and now, I have witnessed the Regatta sailing.

Held every year, the Punta Fuego Regatta sailing event is the biggest sailing event in the country. 47 boats participated during the 2-day event, including the Hobie, Hobie Getaway, Optimists, Open Dinghy, Keelboat and Ocean Multihull.

If you are wondering how you can try out sailing, the Philippine Sailing Association is willing to lend boats and coaches. They have been training adults and kids in exploring this sport saying that the Optimist boats are perfect for beginners and for kids who want to try it out.

Sailing may look simple, but it was really hard, especially with the strong winds and huge waves. Unlike the other boats, the small ones don’t have any electricity and rely on going with the flow and going where the wind takes them.

This is actually a competitive sport where everyone is scored according to their times.

This is the Double Trouble, one of the big boats that dominated the Ocean Multihull Class headed by Robin Wyatt.

“I haven’t seen a very diverse Regatta. I haven’t seen so many catamarans. Punta Fuego can be a considered as a center of catamarans in South East Asia. Sailing could be promoted, optimists is one of the most basic sailing”, said Philippine Sailing Association’s President Ernesto Echauz.
