Rue Bourbon – Awesome Drinks Meets Amazing Food
I’m the resident wine geek of this blog. I’m also one who loves good liquor, great beer, and even better food, the prospect of having a weekend night out to sample Rue Bourbon’s selection of cocktails, shots, and food was irresistible. We started out innocently enough, with some cocktails to start the night.
We began with the Pirate Alley, a Captain Morgan, amaretto, and pineapple mix. With its mild sweetness, it’s definitely a tricky drink as one would tend to gulp it down. The house Strawberry Mojito, being pink, may be a bit strange to regular mojito drinkers. It’s slightly tart, and this acidity helps balance out any snack with batter or was fried (more on those later). The third cocktail, the Gatchi, was noticeably stronger than the others, and combine suggestions of mint and lemon flavors. If you’re wondering about the name, it was after a regular who won a house cocktail-mixing competition. His name was Gatchi.

No drinking would be complete without the customary bar snacks to go along with it. We started out with buffalo tenders, really flavorful and ‘full’ as opposed to a lot of tenders which are fatty and dressed up in batter. I was also not-so-secretly pleasantly surprised with how large the onion rings, shrimps, and fish in batter were. Really filling by themselves and the dip was acidic enough to offset the little oiliness there was. On top of these two highlights, the very spicy sausages and smoky beef tenderloins added to the night’s flavors.

Rue Bourbon really stood itself out for me with its flaming drinks. The bar has a love affair with its cinnamon shaker and to great effect too. We were served three kinds of flaming drinks: the Flaming Lamborghini, the Gunpowder, and Lucifer.

Flaming Lambo’s set up was worth the wait (and the nervousness). Featuring a foot and a half of glassware on fire, the Kahlua and Bailey’s mix at the very bottom (recipient of flaming Bacardi no less) just explode with flavor in the mouth. I honestly wouldn’t recommend this for ‘light drinkers’. It is, however, a nice party highlight.
The Gunpowder was my personal nemesis. It’s an impressive display of sparks and flames, but the steaming hot shot at the end (gulped down with some of the Bacardi’s fumes) was like a shot to the chest. The ‘hit’ was really worth it though, but please space and pace your drinks afterwards. I mean it.
The Lucifer, on the other hand, was a harmless-looking benign shot glass. Once on fire, it didn’t look too bad. Why then is it called “Lucifer”? Head over to the Rue Bourbon branch nearest to you and find out!
