It Might Soon Be Your Last Chance To Take A Selfie At The Trevi Fountain

If you’ve ever dreamt of visiting the old city of Rome and standing with your back to the Trevi fountain as you toss a coin in the hopes of seeing a wish come true then you might want to speed up your plans. According to CNN, a local politician has put forward a proposal to erect a barricade around the famed fountain. This comes on the heels of overcrowding and rowdy tourists posing a danger to the fountain’s integrity.

Andrea Coia, president of the business committee of Rome’s city council, has put forward his plan to the wider city council of constructing protective barriers to “prohibit people sitting on the edge of the fountain.” He does this with the view of safeguarding the fountain as “a symbol of Rome.”

“Rome is one of the richest cities for culture in the world, and a heritage like this must be respected and protected,” his proposal states. “We need to favor a more respectful kind of tourism in the city’s symbolic places.”

The proposal also includes provisions for increased police monitoring in the area. This would entail fixed police checkpoints around the area as well as continuous foot patrols.

It is still unclear how higher state officials such as Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage will respond to the proposal.
