Raoul Danniel A. Manuel, a BS Applied Mathematics student, made history in the University of the Philippines for being the first student from its Visayas campus for being the first summa cum laude graduate. His grade? A near-perfect grade of 1.099. Because of this, he is also the University valedictorian for the batch.

According to Raoul:

As an Iskolar ng Bayan I had to open my eyes to the realities around me and look for ways to become active in the affairs inside and outside of the University. My UP education instilled in me a desire to use my potentials to advance genuine social change. I am not really aiming to be rich or to use my talents to enrich myself materially. I have simple joys and I want to live a life of purpose.

After graduation, he plans to pursue a Master’s degree.

For an almost perfect grade, we wonder: what stopped him from getting a 1? Did he miss a class?
