Kaya Natin! organizes voters’ registration and education caravan, youth concert in support of responsible, progressive leadership
With the 2013 elections drawing near, the call to make the youth’s voices heard has never been louder or clearer. True to its commitment to people empowerment and lasting social change, Kaya Natin!, a non-partisan, multi-sectoral movement dedicated to responsive, ethical leadership, in cooperation with the Ateneo School of Government (ASoG), and the Office of Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, has launched a voters’ registration and education caravan called “R18: Kaya Natin Kung Kakayanin Mo Rin.”
The caravan aims to encourage the Filipino youth, who form around 50% of the current population, to register and to take part in the upcoming elections.
The voters’ caravan brings together the Kaya Natin! Champions. Expected to attend the caravan are Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Government Service, former Governor Grace Padaca of Isabela; Senator Teofisto “TG” Guingona III; Akbayan Representative Kaka Bag-ao; Representative Erin Tañada of Quezon Province; Representative Teddy Baguilat of Ifugao Province; and former Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio, former Inquirer Person of the Year, who will be sharing their stories of best practices for good governance in colleges and universities across the Philippines.
For Harvey Keh, Director for Youth Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship of Ateneo School of Government, and one of the key movers for Kaya Natin!, the voters’ caravan is a crucial first step for the youth to have a stake in creating change in their communities.
“If we want to change our country, we must start with choosing the effective, principle-centered leaders, and we can only do that by exercising our right to vote,” says Keh. “Through the caravan, we hope to encourage more Filipinos, especially the youth, to be more involved in their neighborhoods, and to participate in the elections.”
“Through voting, we have an equal opportunity to enact the kind of change that we want to see,” he shares. “This is why the program is called ‘Kaya Natin Kung Kakayanin Mo Rin,’ because we want to harness the individual power of each young Filipino to contribute to collective efforts of making the Philippines a better place to live in, starting with the leadership that we have.”
Some of the schools that will take part in the voters’ caravan include the De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines Manila, FEU Diliman, De La Salle Lipa, Batangas State University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba and Malayan Colleges Laguna.
Aside from the education caravan, Kaya Natin!, ASoG and the Office of Senator Pangilinan, in cooperation with WhenInManila.com, Ogilvy Public Relations, Big Chill, Siomai House, AHON Foundation and 3G (Goodies for Good Governance), will hold an invite-only concert for its partner schools, universities, and institutions, to be held on September 28, 2012 (Friday), 6 p.m. at the Amoranto Sports Complex Theatre, in Quezon City, which will features local bands such as 6cyclemind, Never the Strangers, Join the Club, Peryodiko, Flying Ipis and Circa.
It will also be participated by the Kaya Natin! founders and champions and the Director of Education and Information Department of Commission on Elections James Jimenez.
A limited number of tickets to the invite-only concert will be given away to those who have registered to vote with the Commission on Elections and to the participants of the Kaya Natin! Caravan of Good Governance in their respective schools.
