Weather bureau PAGASA just officially added Signal No. 5 to the list of public storm warning signals, because of the increasing number of extremely damaging number of typhoons that hit the country, according to reports.Â
So what is Signal No. 5?
Apparently, the new storm signal represents the super typhoon (STY) category, which refers to typhoons with maximum sustained winds of 220 kilometers per hour. The STY category was adopted by PAGASA after the wrath of super typhoon Yolanda in 2013, according to news reports.
Signal No. 5 officially refers to typhoons with maximum sustained winds of more than 220 kilometers per hour, and is expected to bring very heavy to widespread damage in affected areas. Storm surges of more than 3 meters are also possible, according to the report.
PAGASA, however, clarifies that Signal No. 5 does not mean that the other storm signals are weaker. The weather bureau reportedly warned the public not to be complacent just because there is a new storm signal.
