Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Nobel Prize for Literature-winning novel now has a Filipino Edition. Cited to be one of the supreme achievements in world literature, one of the 100 most memorable books of the 20th Century, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is considered Garcia Marquez’s masterpiece and the most notable example of his genre: magic realism.
First published in 1967, it has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into at least 46 languages. This year, Lampara Publishing House Inc., got the rights to publish its Filipino Edition. Translating the masterpiece in our Philippines’ mother tongue is no less than the progressive writer, Luchie B. Maranan, author of the Palanca Award-winning children’s book, “Ang Pangat, Ang Lupang Ninuno, at ang Ilog.”
“One Hundred Years of Solitude,” published in Spanish as Cien Años de Soledad, tells the story of seven generations of the Buendia Family in a fictional town their patriarch, Jose Arcadio Buendia, founded: Macondo in Colombia. The theme of the story echoes not just to Latin America, but to all those colonized lands, affecting millions who have experienced the grief and restraint of being occupied by a foreign nation, something Filipinos are very familiar with.
“Isang Daang Taon ng Pag-iisa (One Hundred Years of Solitude),” the Filipino Edition, will be launched at the Precious Pages Bookstore stall during the Manila International Book Fair 2022 this September 15-18 at the SMX Convention Center.
