Olloclip 3-in-1 Lens: Art from a Fisheye Perspective

Olloclip 3-in-1 Lens: Art from a Fisheye Perspective

When in Manila, you can clearly see how the netizens are pushing their artistic possibilities to a higher degree. Art has its different forms, from paintings to sculptures to taking photos to theatrical plays and the like. After Makati City has been declared the world’s selfie capital (Check out our article on that here: Selfie Capital of the World: Makati Philippines is the Selfiest City), I guess there is no longer any doubt that Filipinos are into taking photographs. As they say, art, like beauty, lies in the eyes of the beholder.

An emerging inclination of Filipinos nowadays is Phone Photography or what you call “Phoneography”. It is an art of taking photos using a mobile phone’s built-in camera. Who says you still need an expensive, bulky DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera to capture beautiful moments? Phoneography encapsulates the essence of spontaneity of seeing something captivating that you quickly want to capture.

An interesting creative phoneography accessory of my choice is the Olloclip 3-in-1 Lens, a quick-connect lens for the iPhone that includes fisheye, wide-angle and macro lenses all in one and in a very handy size. It is the original lens collection first released by Olloclip. I bought mine at Henry’s Camera Shop at Glorietta 5 for only Php1399!

Here is my own Olloclip Lens. The lens on the left side is the Wide Angle Lens, the bigger one found on the right side is the Fisheye Lens. The Macro Lens is concealed within the Olloclip as seen and can be accessed by unscrewing the Wide-Angle lens that is normally attached to it

Here are some photos I took with the Olloclip 3-in-1 Lens:

FISHEYE LENS

It roughly captures a 180-Degree field-of-view and produces strong visual distortion intended to create a wide panoramic or hemispherical image

WIDE ANGLE LENS

It lets you capture more by broadening the angle of view and increasing the depth of field to bring more of the area into focus.  It is approximately double the size of the normal scope of a camera phone.

This lens is probably my least favorite one, though – not because the photo output sucks, but merely because the effect is too close to the normal perspective that you can hardly pinpoint the difference.

MACRO LENS

It focuses on colors and attains maximum sharpness on close-up subjects. It roughly applies a 10X multiplier and allows you to focus the iPhone within 12-15mm of the subject. The Macro lens is concealed within the Olloclip and can be accessed by unscrewing the Wide-Angle lens that is normally attached to it.

For the Macro lens, it may take some practice before you can capture an awesome close-up shot. This is because you will still need to determine the correct distance (in mm) of the camera lens to the subject; otherwise, the macro lens will have a hard time focusing and do its sharpening skill in taking the photo.

For what it’s worth as a whole, photographs can tell a lot of words, though. Whether a picture can either put a smile on your face or bring tears, whether it is a breath taking scenery or a desolating view that gets you every time, photographs can speak the whole of the story even in the absence of words. It is redemption for an emotion so deeply concealed and an expression of oneself in the absence of freedom. I swear this is a must-buy for every art junkie out there! An inspiration for a photograph can hit you anytime and it would definitely suck not being able to capture that moment the way you want it.
