The Hunter’s Moon, sometimes known as the Harvest Moon, Blood Moon, or Sanguine Moon, appears only once every three years. It is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox meaning that its orbit allows the moon to rise just after sunset and shed some extra light — often appreciated by farmers trying to catch up on harvest, hence the alternate name of ‘Harvest Moon’.

This year, the Hunter’s Moon first rises on October 13, Sunday. If you’ve already missed it there’s no point in worrying as it will make a double appearance in the following days. The Hunter’s Moon will continue to light the night sky on Monday and Tuesday night.
Its first rising on the 13th of the month is quite apt in echoing its slightly spooky beginnings. Aside from signaling the time of harvest, the Hunter’s Moon was a day of hunting and slaughtering of animals in preparation for winter. Native American tribes are also said to have considered this a day of feasting.
