WHEN IN MANILA and craving for roasted bite-size pieces of meat or veggies, let Nanbantei of Tokyo give you that yummy yakitori fix.

The interior reminds me of Sushi Kushi Toyo, a Japanese restaurant in Lake Forest, Illinois that also serves super yummy skewers and other Japanese dishes. As you can see from the picture, Nanbantei can get pretty crowded – that’s because everyone loves the food here.

Nanbantei offers a free vegetable appetizer and a fresh towel before you start your hearty meal.

The vegetable sauce from Japan can be very addicting – perfect with any yakitori dishes. It tastes like smoked soybean paste. Yum!

Spicy Tuna Maki (Php 160)

This was delish! The negi added more flavor to the spicy tuna mix while the tempura flakes gave it its crunchy texture.

California Maki (Php 180)

Usually, a california maki only contains crab meat, cucumber and mango. Nanbantei makes it special by adding ebi in it. Plus, they use a bigger kind of ebiko in their rolls. *chomp chomp*

Poteto Maki (Php 95)

Bacon wrapped potato – a sure hit to kids and adults alike. The potatoes were like huge fries. So good!

NOTE: Yakitori orders are two sticks each unless otherwise specified

Beef Yakiniku (Php 180)

A MUST TRY in Nanbantei! It was very juicy, tender and flavorful. I was raving about this all day! I had to ask what made it so good. I got my answer: Nanbantei only uses U.S. imported beef for all their beef items.

Aspara Maki (Php 80)

If your kids do not eat veggies, then give them Nanbantei’s veggie yakitoris wrapped in meat. They wouldn’t notice that they’re already eating some greens.

Onigiri

I enjoy eating yaki-onigiri (grilled rice balls) and when I saw it in Nanbantei’s menu. I just had to order one.

I had the onigiri with salmon flakes inside and asked the staff to grill it for me. It was okay. You might want to order this for the kids – best enjoyed using their bare hands 🙂

Kawa (Php 65)

Chicken skin skewers seasoned with salt. It was so crispy on the sides and juicy inside – reminds me so much of CHICHARON BULAKLAK 😀

Nanbantei sparsely marinades the food that’s why you get that clean taste of the meat and veggies; and, they use an electric griller for a more even temperature to provide customers perfectly grilled yakitori dishes.

Nanbantei makes the coffee jelly from scratch – you can really taste and smell the difference.
