I haven’t seen those curtained booths myself, but when I saw the photos circulating online, it got me thinking!
These confessional-looking booths were placed near the departure area last Tuesday, November 24, 2015.
In an article shared by NewsInfo.Inquirer.net, these booths were provided by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), so that passengers can get a “last look” at their items before they reach the airport’s security screening checkpoint.
It was also mentioned that these booths were provided just so the passengers will have the privacy while sorting out their items.
Furthermore, the article also stated that according to the senior assistant general manager of MIAA, Vicente Guerzon Jr., “plane passengers could dispose of prohibited articles, including bullets kept either as talismans or souvenirs, with no questions asked.”
As we all know, NAIA was previously in the hot seat due to the laglag/tanim-bala (bullet planting) scam. A scam wherein bullets were allegedly planted inside carry-on luggage and used for so-called extortion.
On the other hand, Mr. Guerzon Jr. said that this initiative is to raise public awareness on items banned in both carry-on and checked-in luggage. Moreover, he also shared that the MIAA is looking into setting up so-called “interrogation rooms” with full audio and video recording facilities. This is to prevent any extortion-related scams.
However, due to lack of information or signage, passengers were puzzled and speculated otherwise. Conversely, he said that signs will be provided, so passengers are aware of the said curtained booths moving forward.
