As the world battles with the coronavirus pandemic, many have been trying to find ways to prevent the virus from spreading.

One of the ways that have been suggested is to rinse one’s mouth using mouthwash. However, the World Health Organization already said, “There is no evidence that using mouthwash will protect you from infection with the new coronavirus.”
Still, scientists are pushing for the potential role of oral rinses in preventing the virus from spreading. In a study published in Function, scientists suggest that SARS-CoV-2’s membrane can be damaged using mouthwash chemicals.

The study says, “Population-based interventions could be undertaken with available mouthwashes, with active monitoring of outcome to determine efficacy. This is an under-researched area of major clinical need.”
As of writing, there have been 4.44 million reported cases of COVID-19 worldwide. In the Philippines, there have been 12,091 cases with 2,460 recoveries and 860 deaths.
