Books for Foodies at the 37th Manila International Book Fair

Book lovers come in all shapes and sizes. Who says they can’t be foodies, too? Whether you love to cook, eat, or geek out about food, there’s bound to be a book to catch your fancy.

Welcoming readers of all persuasions, , the 37^th Manila International Book Fair, happening on Sept. 14-18 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City, rounds up some must-have books for Filipino foodies:

• Kulinarya: A Guidebook for Filipino Cuisine (Expanded Second Edition) by Glenda Barretto, Conrad Calalang, Margarita Forés, Myrna Segismundo, Jessie Sincioco, and Claude Tayag, with photos by Neal Oshima (Anvil Publishing, 2016). This groundbreaking book is a compendium of recipes, notes and tips on Filipino cuisine to aid cooks, homemakers, students, and restaurateurs in bringing Filipino cuisine to the tables of the world.
• Memories of Philippine Kitchens by Amy Besa and Romy Dorotan (Stewart, Tabori and Chang, 2012). By the owners of the famed Purple Yam in Brooklyn, this book offers a look at Filipino cuisine and culture, with over 100 recipes both from the Purple Yam menu and private kitchens.
• My Angkong’s Noodles by Clinton Huang Palanca (Summit Books, 2014). This book gives insight into Chinese-Filipino food culture, taking the reader into the kitchens of migrant families, hole-in-the-wall jaunts, street stalls and cosmopolitan restaurants, with a collection of recipes, essays, tips and techniques.
• The Kitchen When it Sizzles by Chrissie M. Peria (Anvil Publishing, 2014). This romance novel involves sizzling hot culinary lessons between a young woman and a hotshot chef that’s substituting for the culinary instructor.
• A for Adobo by Nelson Agustin (Tahanan Books, 2010). This is an alphabet book for kids and foodies alike, with each letter of the modern Filipino alphabet illustrated by a mouth-watering photo of a Filipino dish.
• Linamnam: Eating One’s Way Around the Philippines (Second Edition) by Claude Tayag and Mary Anne Quioc (Anvil Books, 2014). This culinary guidebook points out foodie destinations across the archipelago and unique dishes representing the country’s diverse regional cuisines.
• ph Top 10 Everything Food Lists, 2016 Edition (Summit Books, 2016). The lifestyle website is back with the third edition of its well-loved food and drink book, a handy restaurant guide for wining and dining around Metro Manila.
• Philippine Cookery: From Heart to Platter by Tatung Sarthou (ABS-CBN Publishing, 2016). This cookbook by celebrity Chef Tatung shows the reader how to cook Filipino food, covering the flavours, ingredients and techniques that make up Philippine cuisine.
• Fuss-Free Filipino Food by Angelo Comsti (Marshall Cavendish, 2015). Chef, food writer and industry expert Angelo Comsti presents quick and easy recipes for Filipino dishes – like binagoongan, tinola, maja blanca and yema – without hours of slaving away in the kitchen.
• Asian-American: Proudly Inauthentic Recipes from the Philippines to Brooklyn by Dale Talde (Grand Central Life and Style, 2015). The Filipino alum of reality cooking show Top Chef, Dale Talde, comes up with his first cookbook, showcasing reimagined Asian dishes with Americana flair.
• 20 Years of Love + Cooking by Chef Sau del Rosario (AKME Publishing Group Corp., 2015). A book 20 years in the making, this autobiography chronicles Chef Sau’s journey to his current celebrity status, from his childhood in Pampanga, his experience in Europe, and starting over in the Philippines.
• Panaderia: Philippine Bread, Biscuit and Bakery Traditions by Jenny Orillos and Amy Uy (Anvil Publishing, 2015). This compendium brings us the story of bread, from the bakery to the dining celebrating the Filipino panaderia and how it has evolved over the years.

Find these books and more at the Manila International Book Fair (MIBF), slated on September 14 to 18 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.  Co-located events include the 1st Philippine International Conference on Teacher Education from September 13-15, which tackles the shifting roles and challenges of the 21^st century educator; and the Best of Anime 2016, from September 17-18, the ultimate event for anime lovers and enthusiasts.
