Wicked The Movie 2019: Our Dream Cast!

Finally Defying Gravity onscreen is the smash hit musical “Wicked”, as it gets its much long-awaited release date in movie theaters!

Universal Studios announced that Wicked the movie is slated to be shown in theaters on December 20, 2019!

There's Going to be a Film Adaptation of Wicked the Musical

That’s three Christmases to look forward to!

While no name has been attached to the cast yet, this means we’ve got plenty of time to lobby for our favorite actors to be part of this film!!

Meanwhile, allow us to indulge in our fantasies and share our dream cast for the film. Taken into consideration here is talent/vocal and acting prowess, physical characterization, age/passability for a certain age (it’s showing in 2019, after all!), and star power (because no musical film is ever complete without a powerhouse cast).

Elphaba

Anna Kendrick

Elphaba Wicked Dream Cast

Anna Kendrick is so hot in Hollywood now, and it’s no surprise that she’ll be just as hot in 2019, which makes it only right for her to lead this film! This star had her breakthrough hit with Pitch Perfect, yet has had considerable experience on Broadway and in other musical films such as Into The Woods and The Last Five Years.

Runner-Up: Samantha Barks. Sam Barks proved her star power when she reprised her role as Eponine in the film version of Les Miserables, and certainly her powerful voice suits the strong role of Elphaba.

Galinda / Glinda

Amanda Seyfried

Glinda Wicked Dream Cast

Wicked isn’t just Elphaba’s story; it’s Glinda’s story to. And too ensure Wicked’s success in the box office, the Glinda casting needs to match Elphaba’s star power. We pick Amanda Seyfried for this. She’s proven she’s got the acting chops to pull off effervescent if not ditzy with comedic timing (Hello, Mean Girls, anyone?) and her voice was a pleasant surprise when she headlined the film version of Mamma Mia. Yes to Amanda as the popular Glinda!

Runner-Up: Kristen Bell. This was a veeery close one, I have to admit. Though Kristen Bell is amazing and timeless, Amanda edged her out only a bit by proximity in age to Anna Kendrick.

Fiyero

Jonathan Groff

Fiyero Wicked Dream Cast

Jonathan Groff made us all fall in love not just on Glee, but as the charming Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen. His experiences on Broadway and capabilities are bar none; but if there’s anything that sealed the deal, it’s Hamilton’s Tony win and overall runaway success.

Runner-Up: Aaron Tveit / Jeremy Jordan. Aaron Tveit is Broadway’s golden boy, the guy any musical film or live TV show (Grease Live, anyone?) can count on for a token romantic lead. And Jeremy Jordan can definitely sing and dance his cute little butt off as the lead in Disney’s The Newsies on Broadway, and after starring opposite Anna Kendrick in The Last Five Years.

Boq

Daniel Radcliffe

Boq Wicked Dream Cast

The boy known as Harry Potter is boy no more — Daniel has proven he’s got the chops for theater in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. He would definitely be able to capture Boq’s wide range of emotions, from his initial naïvety and earnestness, to his cold bitterness when he becomes the Tin Man.

Runner-Up: Darren Criss. Sweet, adorable and talented. Okay, that doesn’t sound like an actual description of Boq any more than it is of the actor, but Darren would bring such a charming side to Boq.

Nessarose

Emmy Rossum

Nessarose Wicked Dream Cast

The descriptive line of Nessarose as “tragically beautiful” is something Emmy would capture with such vulnerability and composure. If you haven’t seen her yet as Christine in the movie version of the Phantom of the Opera, you really should now.

Runner-Up: Lea Michele. The Glee alum would have actually been a strong contender for Elphaba, but her polished soprano tone fits the bill of Nessarose more.

Madam Morrible

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep

Is there any other?

Runner-Up: No one comes close.

The Wizard

Victor Garber

Wizard Wicked Movie Dream Cast

Victor Garber has some serious A-list credentials up his sleeve: he’s starred in numerous blockbuster films such as Titanic, Argo, Legally Blonde, Sleepless in Seattle among many others, he’s stayed active on TV, did his time on Broadway (he played Jesus in Godspell!), and is just visually perfect as The Wizard. I rest my case.

Runner-Up: Matthew Broderick. If they decide to make The Wizard a little younger, Matthew would an interesting dimension to this character; an earnest con-man caught up in his own lies.
