LOOK: Mel Tiangco Dubbed “First Pinay on Mars” After 24 Oras News Report

You gotta love Pinoy humor! Netizens couldn’t help but find joy in veteran newscaster Mel Tiangco’s news report on GMA Network’s 24 Oras as she talked about the historic Mars landing of NASA’s Perseverance rover and the Filipino-American engineers who were involved in the mission last Friday, February 19, 2021.

In the segment, Mel was depicted to be on the Red Planet while she delivered the report in the studio, thanks to 24 Oras‘ augmented reality (AR) graphics. The animated rover even drove past her!

The multi-awarded news anchor quickly trended online following the program as Filipino netizens expressed their awe and extended their congratulations to her for being the “first Pinay on Mars.”

“Congrats po, Tita Mel, as kauna-unahang Pinay sa Mars #proudpinoy,” one netizen said.

Mel has consistently been made into memes online for her AR news reports on special events and breaking news. Just last Chinese New Year, she was dubbed the “Mother of Dragons” when she delivered her report while an animated dragon swooped in. Prior to that, she trended at the time of the Taal Volcano eruption in 2020, when the studio set turned into Taal Lake with the volcano right beside her.
