Megan Young and Mikael Daez Admit They’re Okay With Not Having Kids

As a young married couple who are already in their 30s, Megan Young and Mikael Daez are no strangers to questions from people about when they plan to have children. As their third wedding anniversary draws near, the couple sat down to have an open conversation with fans on their YouTube vlog to share their thoughts and feelings about eventually conceiving a baby.

They revealed that it’s been a subject that they’ve talked about during the pandemic and that it’s a valid question that every couple should ask each other. In Megan’s case, she is asked constantly and “in various ways” about her baby plans but admits that it doesn’t bother her at all because she is always prepared with an answer.

“My answer to those questions would be, if we have kids, then we have kids. If we don’t, we don’t. If I get pregnant, okay, and if not, then we just continue living life,” she said.

“I guess it’s not normal or it’s not like a common thing for couples to be like, ‘Yeah, we’re fine even if we don’t have kids.’ Usually, it’s like ‘Yeah we’re trying,’ or ‘Yeah we really want to have kids,’ or sometimes, ‘Maybe like in the next couple of years,'” she continued.

“But for them to actually hear na, ‘Oh they might actually be okay without kids,’ parang it’s a bit of a shock to some people. So they’re curious as to why that’s our point of view.”

For Mikael, his response to such questions is similar to his wife’s. “Look, we’re going with the flow and it’s really all up to Bonez. Because, as you said, you are the baby carrier and I just tell them that I’m just here to support,” he said. “Sometimes I say that it’s a constant conversation between us. Right now, we’re going with the flow. If ever there’s an oops and you get pregnant then okay great, that’s not a problem with us. But if we had a choice, then we’re kind of okay just coasting along living our life, and seeing what life throws at us.”

They also revealed that their mindset on having kids now is different prior to getting married, when Mikael really wanted to have a big family while Megan thought that it was just to be expected of them to have kids eventually.

“I think it was more of discovering what I wanted for my own life. Parang they always say figure out what you want and it will make you happy, di ba? And although a lot of people tell me na iba ‘yung saya kapag nagka-anak ka, iba ‘yung saya kapag may sarili kayong anak, kayo ni Fofo, makikita niyo ‘yung sarili niyo sa mga anak niyo… when I really thought about it, I didn’t know if that was something that I wanted,” she shared.

“To be honest, I really enjoy the life we have together. That it’s just us. And I don’t know if I’m ready to take on a big responsibility like that because it is a responsibility. You are bringing a child into this life. You are going to teach them values, you are going to teach them the way of the world. Is that something that I want for the rest of my life? I’m not sure yet. But I’m not closing my doors to it.”

Although Mikael agreed with Megan that he enjoys the way things are right now without a child in the picture, he also challenged her to “think about the flipside” and not fear the “unknown.”

“When I think about growing a family and having kids, I can see how that can possibly excite me and motivate me as well. It might not make me feel that way right now but there are so many things in life that I didn’t know that it was going to make me feel this way,” he shared. “So para sa akin, instead of being hesitant because it’s closed, I’m literally just thinking ‘okay, I’m happy here but I’m sure that on the flipside of having kids and having a family, I’m sure that I can be happy there too. So it’s just a matter of choice.”

He also assured her that whether or not they will choose to have kids, whatever they have will “be okay.”

Megan then stressed that she is not completely adamant about remaining childless but reiterated that there’s nothing wrong with people making that decision for themselves too.
