One of the most iconic films in pop culture is Mean Girls, and it’s getting the musical treatment as it will soon hit the stage. The news was confirmed by the film’s official Facebook and Twitter account on October 3 last year, an important day in Mean Girls canon. Now, the cast has been announced and it sure looks star-studded!
Cady Heron
The role of Cady Heron will be played by Erika Henningsen, who is known for the being the youngest actress to take on the iconic role of Fantine in Broadway’s Les Miserables.
Regina George
Taylor Louderman will play queen bee Regina George. Louderman’s previous stage credits include Campbell in Bring It On and Wendy in the live production of Peter Pan on NBC.
Gretchen Wieners
The role of the gossip-hungry Gretchen Wieners will be essayed by Ashley Park, who played Celeste in Sunday in the Park with George and Tuptim in The King and I.
Karen Smith
Kate Rockwell will be playing Karen Smith, the not so smart sidekick to Regina George. Previously, Rockwell played Sherrie in Rock of Ages, Skylar in Bring It On, and Margot (and later Elle Woods) in Legally Blonde.
Janis Ian
Barrett Wilbert Weed will play the sarcastic Janis Ian. Weed is no stranger to teen films, as she previously played Veronica in Heathers.
Damian Hubbard
Playing Janis’s best friend Damian is Grey Henson, who played Elder McKinley in The Book of Mormon.
Ms. Norbury
The iconic role of Ms. Norbury will be played by Kerry Butler, who has previously played Brenda in Catch Me If You Can, Sherrie in Rock of Ages, Clio in Xanadu, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Penny in Hairspray, Eponine in Les Miserables, and Belle in Beauty and the Beast.
Aaron Samuels
Playing regulation hottie Aaron Samuels is Kyle Selig, who played Elder Price in The Book of Mormon.
Kevin Gnapoor
Kevin G will be played by Cheech Manohar, a relative newbie to the scene. This will be his debut!
Mr. Duvall
Actor and comic Rick Younger will play Mr. Duvall, the high school principal who has to deal with all the teenage drama.
Mean Girls came out in 2004 and deals with high school life through the eyes of Cady Heron, who was previously homeschooled in Africa. Rotten Tomatoes said that it is “funnier and more smartly written than the average teen comedy,” and it has become a pop culture phenomenon.
The musical will be a collaboration between Tony Award-winning lyricist Nell Benjamin, Mean Girls screenwriter Tina Fey, and her husband Jeffrey Richmond.
Fey once told Andy Cohen that she will not star in the musical and that it will have a “classic Broadway” sound.
