Manix Abrera’s 14 Silent Comics at UP Vargas Museum

When in Manila, where do you to satisfy your artistic cravings? Where do you go to enjoy the local art scene? One great idea is taking some time to visit Vargas Museum’s vast collection of awe-inspiring Philippine art. The museum is located at the University of the Philippines Diliman, along the University Oval. It is pretty hard to miss given that there is a “Vargas” concrete signage at its front lawn. The gallery’s walls, which are painted with a theme of white and gray, are occupied with tall glass windows. Two ancient warriors stand proudly at both sides of the entrance.

Unlike most museums, the entrance fees are pretty cheap. The museum charges P20.00 for students, alumni, faculty, and employees of UP, and P30.00 for everyone else.

Last August, the UP Vargas Museum featured Manix Abrera’s 14 Silent Comics. 14 has nine stories- one divided into four sections; the other in three. It tells the tale of diverse mythical creatures from Philippine folklore such as the manananggal, duwende, and white lady among many others. Upon reaching the third floor, guests will set their eyes on large digital prints, which comprise the 14 vignettes that make up this collection.
