4. Visit the Quiapo Church

Black Nazarene Festival in Quiapo

There’s a mystique surrounding the area of Quiapo, and nothing symbolizes Filipino piety best than the Quiapo church. The cathedral sees many devotees kneeling their way to the altar. Go outside, however, and the sight of fortune tellers, as well as stalls of Filipino amulets and potions can leave you curious.

3. Shop for cheap finds at Divisoria

Cheap clothes, fabric, kitchen supplies and more can be found in the alleys of Divisoria. Comparable to Hong Kong’s Ladies Market, or the Siam and Pratunam areas of Bangkok, first-time shoppers will be overwhelmed by the choices, from 168 Mall to the outdoor tiangges or small stalls. You can get just about the cheapest finds here, especially when you purchase in bulk. Your haggling skills and street smarts will be put to the test, but one can go to Divisoria and leave like a winner if you can drive a good bargain.

2. Get a haircut at Heavyhands Barbershop

You can get a retro rockabilly haircut, but be forewarned: Heavyhands isn’t your grandfather’s barbershop. Mak Azores, one of the pioneers of the Metro Manila street barber scene, is at the helm of this no-frills, three-seater shop. From pompadours to the popular fades, channel your inner Elvis or James Dean. Tip: Reserve your slot online before visiting.

1. Take a stroll around Rizal Park
