Agriculture Department Sets Mango Sale Because Of Summer Surplus

Due to the long dry spell that the Philippines is currently experiencing there has actually been a surplus of mango production. According to Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol, the extended summer heat “precipitated profuse flowering and fruiting.” As such, farmers have estimated a collective surplus of 2 million kilos of mangoes this season.

While Japanese fruit-importing company Diamond Star has committed to importing 1 million kilos of said mangoes, another million kilos of surplus remains a problem for farmers. They worry that the unsold excess will simply be left to rot. Local processors have already dropped their buying prices in order to ease the problem.
