The manatee used to be on the endangered species list. With the fortunate turn of events, the manatee population, especially in Florida, has seen an increase in number. Hence, this removes the animal on the list.

According to CNN, the manatee now moves on the threatened species list. Although the manatee population is still small, hence, threatened, at least it is no longer endangered.

Authorities said that there is still a lot of work to be done to completely remove the manatee from the threatened list. “While there is still more work to be done to fully recover manatee populations, particularly in the Caribbean, manatee numbers are increasing and we are actively working with partners to address threats,” Jim Kurth, the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s acting director, said in a statement.

Still, this is good progress for the manatee. Hopefully, this continues.
