The renaming was initially proposed in August 2018 which earned the support of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and of President Duterte, who wanted to pay homage to the Mactan chieftain who is known in history books as the hero who killed Portuguese invader Ferdinand Magellan during the Battle of Mactan in 1521.

“This will give Lapu-Lapu the recognition that the outstanding Filipino deserved, and in the same thrust, improve the choice of name,” said Cebu City Representative Raul Del Mar, who is the principal author of the bill, in a statement released on June 22.

He also stressed the importance of keeping “Cebu” in the name of the airport to “be consistent with the city’s name and location of its airport.”
