Whoa, Did ‘Lupin III: The First’ Just Get Nominated for an International Film Award?

CG-animated film Lupin III: The First is not only stealing the hearts of anime fans, but it’s also gaining global recognition in the animation industry!

The feature film which premiered in Japan last December 2019 just earned a nomination at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival to be held on June 15 to 30. It will be competing against many other entries from countries like France, South Korea, and Russia under the “Official” category.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Lupin III: The First follows the master thief and his quest to steal the Bresson Diary, a treasure that even his famous grandfather couldn’t procure. It is based on the much-beloved Lupin III franchise originally created by Monkey Punch in 1967.

It went on to have 21 manga volumes, six animated television series, eight theatrically-released animated films, two live-action films, two musicals, several video games, and a long list of other media. It is still regarded as one of the most popular animes of all time.
