For those who have seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it’s pretty clear that the film has subverted much of what has gone on in the Star Wars saga in the past 40 or so years, much to the chagrin of some die-hard fans despite the film, directed by Rian Johnson, garnering critical acclaim.
In fact, some of the long-time Star Wars fans disliked the movie so much they attempted to get a petition going to cancel The Last Jedi out of the canon and remake Episode VIII. Although the movie has caused some pretty polarizing opinions with other viewers claiming that this was the best Star Wars movie so far, looks like the purists might find an ally in Mark Hamill — well, sort of.
Mark Hamill, who played the incorruptible Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy and made his comeback in the film as a hardened, jaded man who sentenced himself to exile after essentially creating Kylo Ren, said that he disagreed with Luke’s choices in the film.
“I said to Rian, I said ‘Jedis don’t give up.
’ I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference, but, it’s not my story anymore.”
Still, Mark believed that Rian was the right man for the job, saying:
“I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he’s Jake Skywalker[…]he’s not my Luke Skywalker but I had to do what Rian wanted me to do because it serves the story well.”
