Lualhati Bautista Has Passed Away

Lualhati Bautista has passed away. Family members confirmed the news on Facebook.

“Sad news for our Torres clan. Our first cousin, Lualhati Bautista, died at 77 years old this morning,” her cousin Sonny Rose Samonte wrote in a Facebook post.

The Filipino award-winning novelist (born December 2, 1945) is famous for her works that explore “feminist themes and the exploration of socio-political issues,” according to Press Reader. Among her contributions to Philippine literature are “Dekada ’70”, “Desaparesidos”, “‘GAPÔ” and “Bata, Bata…Pa’no Ka Ginawa?”

“Dekada ’70”, her self-published book which has been adapted on-screen, is also now a published Penguin Classic. She also wrote the screenplay for the 2002 film directed by Chito S. Roño, starring Vilma Santos-Recto, Piolo Pascual, Christopher De Leon, Dimples Romana, Marvin Agustin, Carlos Agassi, and more.

“Bata, Bata…Pa’no Ka Ginawa?” also has a 1998 film adaptation, also by Roño and Bautista, and also starring Vilma Santos-Recto; which birthed Carlo Aquino’s iconic line: “Akala mo lang wala, pero meron, meron, meron!”
