LRMC Begins Expansion Of LRT-1’s EDSA Station

The Edsa station of LRT Line 1officially began expansion last June 25, 2019. The Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) announced that the expansion was for the sake of passengers’ improved safety, comfort, and convenience.

LRT’s EDSA Station is currently the line’s second busiest station, with it serving more than 52,000 passengers on Weekdays. LRMC President and CEO Juan Alfonso believes the current state of the station to be inadequate in serving such a high volume of passengers. In line with this, he explained the plans to expand:

We will widen the passenger concourse area of EDSA Station to more than 400 square meters – which is more than five times the current floor area of 70 square meters […]

Queuing areas and unpaid areas will be expanded to handle increased passenger flow. LRMC aims to improve customer experience and continue to improve the quality of people’s transport commute.

The move to expand accompanies the plans of the LRMC to extend operations. Once the LRT’s line further extends, ridership demand is likewise expected to increase. Mr. Alfonso states that the EDSA station expansion is therefore done in foresight: “The station will only get busier once the Cavite Extension is finished, with an expected 50% increase in ridership.”

The LMRC has only just begun expansion of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension and is expected to be completed in 2022. Phase 1 will see an additional 5 stations, from Pasay City to Paranaque City.
