WATCH: Official Trailer of ‘Little Women’ Takes on a Feminist Approach

In case you missed it, the official trailer of Little Women just dropped and it takes on a feminist approach! The film, which is based on the classic novel of the same name, follows the story of the March siblings–Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Beth (Eliza Scanlen), and Amy (Florence Pugh).

Little Women

A few seconds in, we can see Jo talking about how she aspires to write a novel about her life and her sisters. The next scene shows that she’s discussing her book with her publisher who says “and if the main character is a girl, make sure she is married by the end,” suggesting other people’s view of women during that time.

The following clips also suggest that many people think that to be successful, women have to get married. For instance, one of her aunts said “no one makes their own way. Least of all, a woman. You need to marry well.”

But despite what society says, Jo doesn’t believe that she needs a man in order to succeed. “Women, they have minds and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty,” she explains. “I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it.”

We can’t wait to see the whole movie and see what else the March sisters have in store. You can expect Little Women to hit the theaters in December 2019.
