The University of the Philippines Materials Science Society (UP MSS) from UP Diliman is celebrating its 21st Anniversary this February with the theme “Lipad: Soaring higher through the years.” After many years and being new to the science scene, it is time that materials science engineering (MSE) gets into the spotlight! With that, the organization highlights its successes through this celebration which marks not an end, but a beginning into reaching greater heights. UP MSS was formed as an academic organization focused on creating innovations in the field of materials science and fuelling young passionate hearts into learning more about the discipline through various scholarly events such as quiz shows and research conferences. Their flagship project is called “Wisdom Wednesday” where information about different materials, technologies, discoveries, and whatnot are disseminated through social media at the general public’s disposal.
The UP MSS 21st Anniversary is a two-week-long celebration starting on the second week of February, which consists of four sub-events: Mulat, Palag, Handog, and Tindig. The organization’s core values – integrity, excellence, professionalism, and camaraderie – are very well incorporated.
Mulat
An exhibit showcasing the organization’s history, vision and mission, flagship events, as well as accomplishments will be launched as the start of the anniversary week at the Palma Hall Lobby, UP Diliman.
Palag
To fire up the members’ competitive spirits, there will be a series of challenges given to kickstart the week. Members will form teams and try to do as many challenges as they can before the anniversary night. This event would act as a team building activity to foster the spirit of camaraderie among one another.
Handog
To show the organization’s sincere gratitude to the Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering (DMMME), UP Diliman for nurturing it and its members for 21 long years, the organization will arrange a grand pakain for the faculty, staff, and students of the department within the week. Along with this, the organization shall also give a small gift bags to the faculty and staff as well as some essentials for the department’s pet animals.
Tindig
On the last night of the anniversary week, the members will be hosting an anniversary night which doubles as a grand alumni homecoming. Current and former members of the organization will come together in a night of fun and games to celebrate not only the founding of the organization, but also the organization we know it as today.
