One of Hollywood’s most elusive clubs is the EGOT, a circle of entertainers who have achieved the almost-impossible: won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. To be inducted into this hall of fame, one must be a well-rounded talent who can transcend one platform. So far, only 15 people have received an EGOT, with Andrew Lloyd Weber and John Legend being inducted last year.
Now that Lady Gaga has won an Oscar for Best Original Song for A Star is Born‘s “Shallow,” she is now two letters away from joining this club.
Lady Gaga has won many, many awards for her performance as an artist. Let’s break the EGOT down.
Gaga has not won an Emmy yet but she has already been nominated three times. The first was for Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden in 2011. It aired on HBO and was nominated for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. This was followed by Tony Bennet & Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek LIVE! in 2015 for Outstanding Variety Special. Two years later, her Super Bowl Halftime Show performance was nominated for Outstanding Special Class Program.
We know Gaga as a singer so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she has plenty of Grammy Awards under her belt. She has been nominated 24 times and has won nine. The Fame has two for Best Electronic/Dance Album and Best Dance Recording for “Poker Face;” The Fame Monster has three for Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Short Form Music Video for “Bad Romance;” Cheek To Cheek has one for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album; Joanne has one for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?);” and A Star is Born OST has two for Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Shallow.”
Today, Gaga took home an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Shallow.” She has also been nominated for Best Original Song for “Til It Happens To You,” which was used in The Hunting Ground, a documentary about sexual assault in schools.
The singer-actress does not have a Tony or a nomination yet, but it’s possible for her to enter the arena with a stage adaptation of A Star is Born. Or maybe a jukebox musical featuring her songs like ABBA’s Mamma Mia! Bee Gees’ Saturday Night Fever, and Green Day’s American Idiot.
Of course, it’s possible that it might take years for Gaga to enter EGOT status. The shortest time for an individual to win one was 10 years (Robert Lopez, composer) and the longest was 45 (Helen Hayes, actress). But with the G and the O under her belt, she is much, much closer to it.
