Kenya’s Coins Now Bear Animals Instead of Leaders

Kenya has just shared images of their new coins – and we love them to bits! In them, images of Kenya’s famous wildlife are showcased, including elephants, rhinos, lions, and giraffes.

Previously, Kenya’s coins showcased the images of past leaders during their rules. This included Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Jomo Kenyatta, the father of Kenya’s current president. However, a lot of Kenyans seemed to think that their leaders were simple trying to promote themselves by having their faces on the coins. Even after Mwai Kibaki promised not to print his image on the coins, he broke that promise and went ahead to do it anyway.

Current President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, said that the new coins signify a “big change” to show that “the nation has come a long way”.

The bank said the choice of animals gives “physical expression to a newly reborn and prosperous” Kenya, and shows respect for the environment.
