Yakun Soft Boiled Egg

When In Manila, we constantly look for new places to eat. Yakun Kaya Toast was once only reachable when in Singapore, but now, we can enjoy its delicious coconut jam even when in Manila.

I typically order half of Set Meal 1 – which includes a slice of kaya toast with butter, 1 soft-boiled egg, and a cup of hot tea (P115).

The kaya toast is basically toasted bread with Singaporean coconut jam and butter. They have many variations such as cheese kaya and French kaya toast, but I still like the original one the most. I prepare my soft-boiled egg by adding 1 tsp of soy sauce and a dash of pepper then mixing it a bit. The toasted bread then gets dipped into the egg mixture; the sweetness of the jam between the toasts is balanced by the saltiness of the egg with soy sauce. Yum!

Paired with the kaya toast is a cup of extremely hot tea. It is served with condensed milk on the side so you can control the sweetness.

Yakun is best as an afternoon snack, or for breakfast when you need a little wake-me-upper – their hot tea can leave you awake for a long, long time When in Manila.
