Manila, Philippines – University of the Philippines-based indie band Joop releases its debut EP today at Skarlet’s Jazz Kitchen. Joining them are guest bands The Squibs, Hatchobanko, Lights in Transit and The Wilderness. The three-piece indie/experimental band consists of Enzo Zulueta on vocals and guitars, Jason Rombaoa on drums and Marco “Part 2” Sambrano on bass.

“The story of Joop is that we’re really good griends from The UP Music Circle. We found out that we all like the same type of music: weird and made up of layered soundscapes with a locked in rhythm section.” Sambrano shares.

While balancing a hectic academic schedule, the band started to record its debut EP in late 2011 at The Garrison Studio in Quezon City. Zulueta looks back,  “It took us awhile to complete this EP because we wanted to take the necessary steps to make sure we’ve put out our best performance during recording. It’s tough to balance your interest in music while studying, but I think we’ve made it happen pretty well.”

With his thoughts about the songs and the release itself, Zulueta adds, “The EP feels like the theme to the start of an adventure. It’s a very optimistic collection of our songs and we feel that we are looking towards the future when we listen to it. We are really proud and excited to release this EP, and we’re very willing to share it with everyone who wants to listen.”

For fans of the diverse expanses of alternative and experimental music, Joop introduces a fresh and exciting new sound culled form what many would consider  “weird” or “disjointed.” Rombaoa explains where they got their musical influence,  “We tried as best as we can to meld the sounds of Mew, Minus the Bear, Toe and Mutemath with the driving beats of bands like Battles and Block Party. Hopefully we‘ve come out with a sound uniquely ours”. With these harmonic ideas then in mind, the band strives to create the most melodically concise aural masterpieces as well as they could possibly can at this stage of their musical youth.

Joop’s debut EP launch is co-produced by BUI Productions and The Garrison Studio together with media partners Dig Radio, Pinoy Tuner, Splintr.com, Bootleg-Radio and When in Manila.
