India Bus Rapist Says “Girls Are Responsible For Rape”, Blames His Victim For The Attack

We’re not sure how to feel about this.

One of the men convicted of gang raping a 23-year-old girl on a moving bus in Delhi, India spoke against his sentence and said that it was the victim’s fault that she was attacked, as “girls are far more responsible for rape” than men, according to a report from BBC.

The victim soon died from sustaining brutal injuries, after the assault on her by six men while her way home from the movies with a male friend. Five of the suspects were sentenced to death by hanging, while the other, a minor, was sentenced to three years in a reform facility for juvenile offenders.

Despite prosecutors’ findings that all men took part in the rape and took turns driving the bus, one of the suspects, Mukesh Singh, maintains that he was the one driving the bus throughout and did not take part in the assault. In a recent interview with BBC, Mukesh claims that the girl’s death was an “accident”, and that the men never meant to kill her.

“When being raped, she shouldn’t fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they’d have dropped her off after ‘doing her’, and only hit the boy,” Mukesh said.

He went on to saying more things like:

“A decent girl won’t roam around at nine o’clock at night,”

“A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy. Boys and girls are not equal.”

“Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes.”

“About 20 per cent of girls are good.”

Mukesh also reportedly suggested that people “had a right to teach them a lesson”.

He also apparently blames his impending execution– if he and the rest of the convicted are executed, India is supposedly putting future rape victims at an even more dangerous situation.

“Now when they rape, they won’t leave the girl like we did. They will kill her. Before, they would rape and say, ‘Leave her, she won’t tell anyone.’ Now when they rape, especially the criminal types, they will just kill the girl.”

Mukesh is currently appealing his sentence.
