A quick background: this science fiction, action and adventure-packed movie is actually a sequel to 1996’s highest-grossing film “Independence Day.” It was about aliens wanting to wipe out mankind on the 4th of July and now, there’s a “resurgence” twenty years after their first attack.
I had the chance to watch Independence Day: Resurgence the night it premiered on June 22nd (thanks to When in Manila, PMCM events, and Resorts World Manila for the special block screening!), and I must say I didn’t know what to expect at first. I haven’t seen the prequel (don’t judge me!) and I was nervous about not understanding a thing.
I was wrong! I shouldn’t have worried about anything at all! I loooved the movie! I’ve always been fascinated about science fiction, exploring possibilities that are literally out of this world. Intently watching, I was imagining how nostalgic this must feel to those who have watched Independence Day back in 1996. As for me, I was dwelling with context clues, wondering how particular scenes might be connected, similar, or different to the first film.
Don’t fret. Since I want to make sure I deliver an objective, unbiased review, I was finally able to watch the blockbuster movie from two decades ago before I started writing this.
Moving on. Of course, it’s a given. The graphics are astonishingly improved! If you’re a fan of extraterrestrial beings and science, this movie won’t disappoint. They were able to explain the science behind the possibility very well.
I also adore that some main characters from the 1996 film were in Independence Day:Â Resurgence, too! Jeff Goldblum as Mr. David Levinson, Bill Pullman as (former) President Whitmore, and Brent Spiner as Dr. Okun among others; plus Maika Monroe and Jessie T. Usher are grown-up versions of kids who starred in ID4!
Fun Fact: In case you were wondering, Independence Day (1996) was nicknamed as ID4. Some say it stands for Independence Day 4th of July.
I’m amazed that aliens might just be true to life! I’ve had second thoughts about their existence while watching the movie. Yup, the film was THAT convincing; I never believed in them, but after seeing this? I think I’m going to research about studies, theories, and documentaries about them.
If there’s one thing I learned from this film, it’s about not judging someone (or something) right away. You might be pushing away those with the best intentions. You’ll never know who will lend you a helping hand when you need one.
Anyway, I need to get back to my movies journal now..
