Have you ever wanted to learn Japanese swordsmanship? Now you can because IGA Kendo Club will be having free trials (yes, free!) this July 21 and July 28, 2018 in the 3rd Fitness Lab located at 124 Dr. Lazcano St., Brgy Sacred Heart Quezon City (beside Bagoong Club).
IGA Kendo Club is led by Koji Igarashi-sensei, a 5th-dan holder who has been practicing Kendo for more than 40 years, and Kristopher Inting-sensei, a 4th-dan holder who has been practicing Kendo for 16 years. The club has expanded its roots from a children’s class held in a hotel function room in 2009 to a full-fledged dojo now with 3 branches (they have two in Makati and one in Quezon City) and over 70 active members.
In IGA Kendo Club, they don’t just teach you the stances and techniques; they also teach you the philosophy of the sport, and it is an activity for both the spirit and the body. IGA Kendo Club is under the umbrella of the United Kendo Federation of the Philippines, so they are authorized to join both local and international official Kendo events. Just a few months ago, their students went to Hong Kong to take their dan exams and join a tournament. They’re not just a club; they’re a family whose members all share the same love for Kendo.
The free trial is open to people of all ages and physiques! You don’t need any prior experience; just come in comfortable sportswear and they will lend you a shinai (a bamboo sword) to use. When you finally decide that you want to continue on the spirit of the modern samurai, you can officially join the beginners’ class, which will start on August 4, 2018.
