HUAWEI MateBook D15: A Powerful Yet Affordable Laptop at only P37,990

I’ve been looking for a new laptop since last year when the battery of my MacBook became defective.  Well to be fair, I’ve been really satisfied with my MacBook and it has served me well for years. However since everyone’s on crisis at the moment, I believe it would be impractical for me to buy another 100k worth laptop and I don’t really do much photo and video editing anymore so I don’t need an expensive computer anymore.

Also, I thought since I use HUAWEI smartphones, why not switch to a HUAWEI laptop so I can easily link photos and files?  I think it makes a lot of sense.

Good thing early this year, HUAWEI launched the HUAWEI MateBook D 15 – A laptop packed with amazing specs for only P37,990! And now, I’m thankful to get the chance to borrow a unit so I can test it out if it’s worth buying.

The HUAWEI MateBook D 15 may cost only less than 40K, but it does have unique features. Here’s a list of my observations as well as the things I really like about the HUAWEI MateBook D 15.

The Screen

The HUAWEI MateBook D 15 has 15.6 inches of beautiful IPS FullView screen. It weighs just 1.53 kgs and has a thickness of 16.9 mm2. Its TÃœV Rheinland certified display reduces eye-impairing blue light significantly to ensure viewing pleasure and long-term optical health.

It looks quite refreshing to the eyes to work on a much bigger screen after many years. I really like the fact that it’s wide so I enjoy a much bigger screen whenever I watch movies. I’m not really that satisfied with the screen resolution, but I think it’s because of its price range. I would have to agree though that despite watching videos for hours, my eyes didn’t hurt much. Another thing I didn’t like was that I find it too big and heavy to carry around and fit in my bag. I travel a lot for work so it helps to have gadgets that are slim and light. I hope HUAWEI will come up with a much lighter and smaller sized laptop next time.

The Processor

Inside, this beast is powered by the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor, which accelerates and enhances performance. Fitted with a PCIe SSD3, and packing up to 16 GB in dual-channel architecture DDR4 RAM, its read and write speeds are blisteringly fast. With its Radeon Vega 8 Graphics, you can master daily work or enjoy entertainment with no effort.

So far, I’m able to do my daily tasks such as writing, working on emails and watching videos with ease. As for photo and video editing, I do all those now on my HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro since I use its camera for work. After editing on my phone, I can swiftly transfer them on the HUAWEI MateBook D 15 using HUAWEI Share. The HUAWEI Share feature is one of my favorites as it transfers photos in lightning speed between HUAWEI devices. Having this on a laptop is beyond awesome!

Battery and Charging

The HUAWEI MateBook D 15 comes with a 65 W USB-C charger that fits right in your pocket, so you can charge on the go. It can charge the laptop battery to 53% in just 30 minutes. It supports fast charging and data transfer for your phone.

For me, HUAWEI’s fast charger and battery life is super reliable and it’s so delightful to know that this feature also applies to their laptops. Charging time was indeed super quick. The battery lasted for over 6 hours, so I was able to work wirelessly with ease. I’m not sure though if the battery will still perform well after 6 or 8 months since this is just a borrowed unit, but in my years of using HUAWEI smartphones, their batteries stay reliable even after 18 months of use. So yeah, I’m pretty sure this will also apply to their laptops.

Added Security

The power button of the HUAWEI MateBook D 15 has a built-in fingerprint reader, so you can power on and log in securely with just one press.

With this feature, I don’t need to worry about other people opening/using my precious platforms and files without my permission. Another neat feature for an entry-level laptop!

The Discreet Camera

The innovative recessed camera sits discreetly in the keyboard. Just one press, it pops up only if you want it. Flip it down again to prevent potential remote access and security breaches.

It’s my 1st ever time to see a laptop with a camera like this. I think the idea is super smart and provides people with more security since you can simply flip it up if you need to use it. My only issue is that I don’t look good when the camera angle is too low. Hehehe

Based on its performance after using it for about a month, I think the HUAWEI D 15 is actually a steal for its SRP. To me it’s worth more than P37,990. I’d recommend this to students, fresh grads, writers, start-up entrepreneurs, young professionals and to anyone who is looking for a powerful yet not-so-expensive laptop to help fulfill basic tech related work like composing documents, web surfing, managing emails, watching videos etc.  If you’re a HUAWEI smartphone user, then using this laptop will indeed make your life more seamless because you will get to sync your phone and laptop without effort.
