I watched ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ at our block screening with PMCM Management at Resorts World Manila last Wednesday and to cut to the chase: it was totally worth it.
2014’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was definitely a tough act to follow. It was a surprising treat for someone like me who had no idea what the Guardians of the Galaxy even were to begin with. It won me over with the soundtrack, the humour, the cast and, of course, Baby Groot.
Well, this year’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ doesn’t disappoint, either. The music is completely on point, the cast is great, Baby Groot shines like a diamond, and – while I wouldn’t say it’s better than the first one – I can say that it definitely retains the fun factor and the funny factor. In fact, I can no longer count how many times I laughed out loud in the cinema while watching it – and not just your regular laugh… but the throwing-the-head-back, the-whole-cinema-can-hear-you kind of laugh.
What I like the most about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, in general, is the fact that it isn’t really part of the rest of the Marvel Universe movies yet. It’s like a series of its own and I love how they were able to pull everything off and make it awesome without the use of more popular Marvel superheroes, like Iron Man and Spider-Man. I honestly had no idea who the Guardians of the Galaxy were before the first movie. In fact, I didn’t even want to see it. But then it turned out to be amazing and it is now one of my favorite Marvel movies so far.
In the second instalment of the Guardians franchise, several things are going on. For starters, a golden-skinned queen named Ayesha, who reminds me an awful lot of Paris Hilton, hires the Guardians of the Galaxy to do a job that unfortunately takes a turn for the worse. Secondly, Nebula is out to seek revenge on her sister Gamora and her father Thanos. And lastly, Star-Lord’s father Ego shows up to explain exactly what happened between him and Peter’s mother, and this is where the various twists and turns happen.
Yes, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ is all about family this time around and behind all of the action and the humour, the messages are beautiful. It shows us that you don’t need to be related to someone by blood to consider them family. In fact, sometimes, those people are more of a family than your family ever will be. It also shows us that there is always an explanation for every family feud; you just need to learn to ask and actually listen.
Of course, above all things, the movie is still a whole lot of fun, though. The visuals are stunning, the explosions are loud, and there are enough rainbow colours in it to last you a lifetime. It is also hella funny, thanks mostly to Drax, who really shines in providing the humour this time around. While ‘Guardians 2’ may not be a better movie than the first one, I have to say that it’s definitely the funnier one.
From the very beginning where Baby Groot can be found dancing to music while a massive battle scene happens all around him to the very end, ‘Guardians 2’ is hilarious. And on that note, yes, there is a lot of Baby Groot. This has to be mentioned because, come on… who doesn’t love Baby Groot?
As predictable as it might be, it is hard not to call ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ awesome. Because it is. Trust me on this. Make sure you watch it while it’s still in cinemas!
