PhilDev announces that the esteemed professor   is joining Silicon Valley Comes to the Philippines as Keynote Speaker at the PhilDev Economic Forum on October 8.

 

 

 

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (September 25, 2012) – As Philippine Development Foundation (PhilDev) draws near to its 2012 PhilDev Economic Forum, the Foundation announces a new set of key speakers from various fields of technology, academe, and entrepreneurship who will be joining special event  on October 8th, 2012, Monday, 9am to 6pm  at the Manila Peninsula in Makati City.  

 

With the theme “Harnessing Filipino Innovation and Entrepreneurship,” Manila will become the convergence zone as innovative high-tech companies, entrepreneurs, and key government officials promote a deeper understanding about investment in the Philippines and potential collaboration on business ventures.

 

The Economic Forum will is hosted by by PhilDev’s US-based Filipino Board of Directors who are established entrepreneurs and gamechangers. Dado Banatao, PhilDev Chairman of the Board, President Catherine Buan Peterson and  Trustees and Event Chairs, Winston Damarillo, Chairman and Founder of Exist Global Inc., and Sheila Lirio Marcelo, Founder and CEO of Care.com and other Board Members of have invited and confirmed some of Silicon Valley’s movers and shakers to be among the esteemed panel of speakers.

 

Leading the group is Dr. Eric Brewer, Professor of Computer Science at University of California, Berkeley and Vice President of Infrastructure of Google, Inc.. Before joining the internet giant, he founded the Federal Search Foundation, which was responsible in building FirstGov, now known as USA.gov, the official portal of US government. He was also the Founder and Chief Scientist of Inktomi Corporation, a California based company that provides internet service providers. The company was later acquired by Yahoo in 2002. He has also received awards including, MIT Technology Review TR100’s one of the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35 in 1999, and ACM-Infosys Foundation Award in the Computing Sciences in 2009. He was also the primary innovator  of the wireless networking process called WiLDNet which brings low-cost connectivity to rural areas in developing countries.

 

Joining Dr. Brewer is Toby E. Stuart, an entrepreneurship expert and distinguished  professor  at the most prestigious universities in the United States such as the Columbia Business School and University of Chicago. He is Charles Edwin Wilson Professor at Harvard Business School and Leo Helzel Chair in Entrepreneurship, and Faculty Director of the Lester Center of Entrepreneurship at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Stuart has won numerous awards for his research, including University of Southern California’s Greif Award for Research Impact for his Entrepreneurship paper in 2008, and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation Prize Medal for Distinguished Researchin Entrepreneurship in 2006. He received his Doctorate Degree at the Graduate School of Business in Stanford University.

 

Also speaking at the forum is Dr. Jerry Held, the person responsible for Oracle’s most important products during a period of rapid growth in 1998, from $1.5 billion to $6 billion in annual revenues as its Senior Vice President then. He has also spent 18 years at Tandem Computers where he was a member of the executive team which helped the company grow from a startup to $2 billion in annual revenues. He is also the chairman of Vertica Systems, Bella Pictures, and Software Development Technologies. A graduate of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue, he has received his Masters Degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctor  of Philosophy Degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
