GoNegosyo and Peace & Equity Foundation Hold Acceleration Bootcamp for Southeast Asia Mobile App Challenge PH 

 

The 1^st Southeast Asia Mobile Application Challenge Acceleration Bootcamp in the Philippines was held last November 29, 2014 at the Commission on Higher Education Auditorium in Diliman, Quezon City.

The Acceleration Bootcamp is the second phase of SEAMAC Philippines as aspiring mobile app developers gathered to learn from mobile app, technology and business experts. The bootcamp gathered 61 teams from all over the Philippines including teams from Pangasinan, Batangas, Nueva Ecija, Rizal, Laguna, Cebu, Bacolod, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and Davao.

Dr. Paris De L’etraz, the Managing Director and Professor of Entrepreneurship of Venture Lab, inspired the participants to go outside their comfort zones, facing the uncertainty by understanding their personal and professional comfort zones.  He also discussed that technology that we have in our hands – mobile phones and apps that people use and enjoy today has a big potential in entrepreneurship. Foundations and strategies of creating a mobile application were also discussed as each element is important – from the photos, look, size, font choice and the overall content.

Hannah Chou, the creator of Our City Love from Taiwan which recently won in the Social Entrepreneurship Venture Day shared their team’s mobile application that was able to help PWDs to look for food hubs that cater to their needs and was able to inspire others to do the same.

The morning session ended with Jeffrey Char of J-Seed Ventures Inc.  He discussed the detailed mechanics of the Southeast Asia Mobile Application Challenge.

The afternoon session started as Filipino technopreneurs gathered in a panel as each shared their experiences from conceptualization, creating and launching their apps. The panel was composed of Yves Gonzalez, MMDA Traffic Navigator Application; Brian Cu, GrabTaxi Philippines; Kim Harold Sinang, GoManila!; Carlo Calimon, MobKard; Louis Michael Concepcion, Tanaw; and Earl Martin Valencia, IdeaSpace.

The whole activity was wrapped by individual team mentorship sessions by Paris de L’etraz, Jeffrey Char and Conchita Galdon.

After the bootcamp, teams were challenged to submit their final requirements consisting of a PowerPoint presentation and a 2-minute video about their planned mobile application. Deadline is December 12, 2014. This is their start with their journey to the Regional Final in Singapore in February and to Barcelona in the world finals by March 2015.

SEAMAC Philippines 2014 is mounted by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship- GoNegosyo and Peace & Equity Foundation in cooperation with Applied Innovation Institute. The bootcamp was supported by the Department of Technology – Information and Communications Technology Office, Far Eastern University- Institute of Technology, Bo’s Coffee, Bar-B King, CityMall, and Philippine Franchise Association.
