Give a Book – Help Build Libraries for Children Living in Poverty!

How can you make this Christmas extra special? Give a book.

ATD Fourth World Philippines is calling on everyone to join its campaign to build mini-libraries for children living in different resettlement communities. They are asking for donations of children’s books, picture books, and colorful magazines.

Altogether in Dignity (ATD) is an NGO that works with communities and institutions to find solutions to eradicate extreme poverty. It seeks to empower communities by providing street libraries, art and learning activities.

Give a Book ATD Mini Library

According to ATD volunteer Sana Sta. Ana, the mini-libraries will provide an access of knowledge to people living in poverty. They will serve as community centers and alternative learning systems for both children and adults.

“The mini-libraries will not only be a “house for books” but a venue for all community members to interact. Older people will read to kids, teach them to read or learn new skills. While the older people will learn from the experience of helping others in need,” she said.

The libraries will also be used to conduct forums and workshops for the communities.

But why children’s books only? Sana explained that the communities specifically requested children’s books as not all of their children and adults are literate but they do enjoy looking or reading books with colorful images.

ATD will launch this project next year in two communities in Calauan, Laguna and Pandi, Bulacan.
