Freaks: A World-Building Sci-Fi Thriller You Need to Watch

Stranger Things, Dark, and Black Mirror. It’s the age of world building sci-fi thrillers and we are definitely here for it. Adding to this roster of incredibly crafted shows comes sci-fi thriller film Freaks. It originally premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival and made its commercial debut this September.

Set in a somewhat unassuming version of the future, the film starts off strong. 7-year-old Chloe immediately captures our interest with her unusual setup, seemingly living isolated from the rest of the world in a deteriorating house with her father. So many questions pop up right off the bat. Where’s her mom? Why does their house look like that? Why does it look like she hasn’t gone outside in a long time? The questions just kept on piling up as every minute passes and the delicious buildup of anticipation and curiosity keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

My easter egg-hunter mind eventually took over and looked for answers in all of the incriminating details in every scene. Was Chloe kidnapped? Was that her real father? We found out soon enough. It seems that in this world, “Abnormals” or “Freaks” are not allowed to roam free.

Once we got a clue about what was really happening, it was every bit as satisfying as we thought it would be without giving everything away too early and losing the story completely. There were so many ways the story could have gone, and the route that it did take is a definite winner for the upcoming set of thriller films everywhere.

You’ll certainly end up rooting for and even shedding a few tears here and there for our unexpected heroes. Fans of sci-fi thrillers, psychological thrillers, and even dystopia all have something to see here.

Freaks is a great watch complete with mystery, thrill, and even drama. It’s an adventure full of twists and turns without the annoying confusion we sometimes get from this kind of movie. Freaks is definitely one film you shouldn’t let pass as it’s a great pre-game for all of the sure-to-come Halloween thrillers!
