Filipino Cuisine at Its Home-Cooked Finest: Gerarda’s in Tagbilaran City

You can only take so much grilled food before you stop having an appetite for them. YES? This is exactly what we were feeling on a recent trip to Bohol. The Alona beach, where we stayed, offered decent meals, but none of which were particularly memorable. Most were barbecued.. and damn, they were expensive, too.

Me and my travel buddy were already craving for comfort nomnoms by the the second day. You know, home cooked. No, we were not homesick (we would like to stay in Bohol forever, please – it is one of the most beautiful places in the Philippines! Read more about it here: Top 20 Philippine Beaches and Islands: MUST SEE List of Top Vacation Destinations in the Philippines) We were really just hungry. Grilled everything just won’t cut it.

Good thing we asked our guide to bring us to where we could eat good food. He brought us to Gerarda’s, a family-owned Filipino restaurant in Tagbilaran City.

Gerarda’s is an old house converted into a restaurant. First-timers might find the place hard-to-find (good thing we had our guide!). It’s located on one of the quieter streets of the city, which makes it a relaxing location to dine away from the busy streets of Tagbilaran.

Kuya told us that it just opened recently, but it is worth noting that it is already attracting a lot of customers. And while it is fairly new, it feels older because of the interior.

I was amazed with the insides of the house. It is decorated with wooden furnitures and ethnic items. The atmosphere is homey and cozy and reminds me of Christmas dinners I see in movies.

It looks so simple and elegant with all the tables laid out. Glass and wood make for a nice and appealing setup.

The restaurant screams pricey. To be honest, we were scared – it looked like a expensive place. So, when the menu came, we were surprised to find out that the dishes were actually priced as low as Php175!
