Filipino Cosplayers Win Top Award in World Cosplay Summit

Two Filipino cosplayers just bagged one of the top prizes in the recent World Cosplay Summit and we are overflowing with pride!

Team Namizake, consisting of Jin Joson Jameson (aka “behindinfinity,” a cosplaying icon known best for transforming into Naruto, Rurouni Kenshin, and more) and AC Hernandez, wowed judges with cosplay photos of themselves as Jiraiya and Uzumaki Naruto which earned them the Brother Award from the international summit on Sunday, August 8.

“Cosplaying as Uzumaki Naruto (Jin) and Jiraiya (Hernandez) from the hit anime series “Naruto,” the duo got the special award which is given to the team with the Best Costume and sponsored by sewing machine manufacturer Brother,” announced the World Cosplay Summit Philippines in a Facebook post.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s edition of the anticipated annual international cosplay competition traditionally held in Nagoya, Japan was done through video skits submitted by 30 participating competing countries and 1 observer country.”

Jin, meanwhile, expressed her joy over the award on her own social media post.

“I felt like it was such an honor just to be the first to bring our beloved Naruto to the WCS stage and to get the kind of comments that we did from the judges and the viewers, BUT on top of that we get a major award for the Philippines (presented by Toru Furuya!)* and plant our flag on the list of awardees for a historic first time!” she gushed.

*Toru Furuya is a known Japanese voice actor popular for voicing the characters Tuxedo Mask in “Sailor Moon” and Amuro Ray in “Mobile Suit Gundam.”

Jin said that she did not expect to win anything considering that it’s her and AC’s first time to join the World Cosplay Summit and she is grateful for the recognition.

“It’s all still overwhelming but I am so so happy and grateful!!!” she said. “On this field, AC and I know we are still rookies who have room to learn and grow but we hope we’ve made you proud!!”

In their introductory video submitted to the summit, the duo explained that they chose characters from the famous anime franchise as it is the one that helped shape their cosplay journey.
